During the shooting of The Empire Strikes Back, Lucasfilm was in grave danger of bouncing its paychecks? Bank of America, its primary lender, yanked its financing as the film's costs climbed over budget. Lucasfilm's management pointed out that Empire was the sequel to the most successful film of all time, but the bank's new entertainment manager refused to back down. This debacle forced George Lucas to return to Twentieth Century Fox for financing, a threat to his creative autonomy that he had wanted to avoid.

Union is a four-issue Star Wars comic miniseries written by Michael A. Stackpole. It takes place about 20 years after the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and chronicles the dangers and trials leading up to Luke Skywalker's wedding to Mara Jade.

Tales of the Jedi: Dark Lords of the Sith is a six-part story arc in the Tales of the Jedi series of comic books written by Kevin J. Anderson. The first issue was published on 1 February 1996 by Dark Horse Comics. The story is set in the Star Wars galaxy 3,997 BBY years before the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It continues the tale of Ulic Qel-Droma and introduces the character of Exar Kun, a Dark Lord of the Sith. The story details how the Jedi, lead by Ulic Qel-Droma and Nomi Sunrider attempt to free the Empress Teta System from the tyrannical control of evil Dark Side adepts Satal and Alema. It also details Exar Kun's fall to the Dark Side at the seduction of the spirit of Freedon Nadd, becoming Dark Lord of the Sith with Ulic as his apprentice.

Tales of the Jedi: The Sith War is a six-part story arc in the Tales of the Jedi series of comic books written by Kevin J. Anderson. The first issue was published on 1 July 1996 by Dark Horse Comics. The story is set in the Star Wars galaxy 3,996 years before the Battle of Yavin in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, and continues the story of Ulic Qel-Droma and Exar Kun. The story also shows how the current Mandalore shows great loyalty to Ulic.

Mandalore the Indomitable, wage war on the Teta system. Mandalore challenges Ulic Qel-Droma to a duel, which Ulic accepts on the terms that if he wins, he shall receive control of the Mandalorian warriors. Ulic wins, and recruits Mandalore and his army to fight for the Sith. They begin to plan an attack on Coruscant.

Star Wars: Vader's Quest

Vader's Quest is a four issue comic book miniseries set in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, written by Darko Macan and drawn by Dave Gibbons and Angus Mckie. Published by Dark Horse Comics, the original four issues appeared in February through May of 1999; a trade paperback reprinting all four was released in December of that same year.

Darth Vader hires bounty hunters and an Imperial agent who is working for Darth Vader seeking for information about the author of the destruction of the Death Star. One captured Rebel pilot informs him of the pilot's identity — Vader's son, Luke Skywalker — and Vader sets up a plan for catching him, which eventually fails. This series depicts the first meeting between Luke and his father.

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire is a multimedia project created by Lucasfilm Ltd. in 1996. The original idea was to create an interquel, a story set between the movies The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (a time no Star Wars novel had explored before), and to explore all commercial possibilities of a full motion picture release, without actually making the film. The venture paved the way for the theatrical release of the Star Wars Trilogy: Special Edition in the following year, and the later releases of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy.

The comic book emphasizes the destiny of Boba Fett and his fellow bounty hunters, first seen in a brief scene on The Empire Strikes Back. It also tells the story of Jix, Darth Vader's assistant, who infiltrated Jabba the Hutt's gang of bikers to prevent that band's attempt to murder Luke Skywalker. The series was written by John Wagner and illustrated by Kilian Plunkett.

The comics were written and drawn at the same time of the novel, so the first issue could be released immediately after the book. However, the story told by the comics has many differences. The first, and most important one, is that the comics tells what happened to Boba Fett and his "friends," the bounty hunters hired by Darth Vader to find the Millennium Falcon in The Empire Strikes Back. Steve Perry, author of the project's novel, was a consultant of the comics. While the stories in the book and comics seldom intersected, it was necessary that characters, scenes, and dialogue match when they did come together.

A sequel was written to the original story by Steve Perry, the author of the Shadows of the Empire novel. The project is known as Shadows of the Empire: Evolution, and was created in the form of a series of five comic books. These books were later combined to create a compilation book.

Classic Star Wars Comics

Did you know that...

Luke Skywalker's name was originally supposed to be Luke Starkiller, according to early versions of the original scripts? The name was later recycled for Bendak Starkiller.

The shooting location for Return of the Jedi was masked as the shooting location of the fictional film Blue Harvest? Lucasfilm allegedly wanted to avoid the publicity associated with a new Star Wars film, and even went as far as to have Blue Harvest shirts and caps made for the cast and crew. Another reason for this was people charging extra for props, sets, etc. on the films because the film was Star Wars.
